The Academy was founded in 1978 by the eminent psychologist, Neal Miller, formerly of the Rockefeller University. Its purpose was to provide a forum for established behavioral medicine researchers where ideas could be exchanged in an informal yet scientifically charges atmosphere. As such, a primary activity of the Academy is its annual meeting. In addition to exciting scientific exchanges during the meeting, an annual Neal Miller award is given for outstanding contribution to the field by a young scientist.
All members of the Academy are elected to memebership after being nominated by two Academy members and being voted by the Membership Committe of the Academy. High levels of scientific productivity and recognition are the primary criteria for membership and some members are influential governmental or philanthropic leaders in the field.
